I've been thinking a lot about the gay teens and children of our generation, who are coming up into such a judgmental society. I've found many websites that have resources for gay teens, places to talk and blog, and to get help. But with so many progressions in law and society, I really hope the gay youth of our generation will eventually see true freedom. Primarily in their right to marry, because too many people have been discriminated against thus far. It's time to see a generation of people who are embraced for their diversity and self expression.
Check out some of the gay youth websites to see where we're at currently with supporting our peers. There is no time like the present to show our peers of any gender, race, or sexuality that we are truly accepting and supportive of each other. We all need support and love. I want nothing more than to live in a country and society that agrees.

The Future of Gay Rights
Our class isn't the only group of people predicting the future for gay rights!
This is a prediction focused on gay marriage. This particular group has guessed which states will legalize gay marriage in what year, but they are all in the near future. Based on legal cases, societal views, and the progression we've seen so far, it's safe to say that gay marriage is on its way to freedom.
This is a positive outlook on the future, and I'm sure many people have opposing views, but I agree that we are in for many changes in the next few years.
It's time to live in a truly free country!

Anti-gay Music
This article is about Beenie Man, a Jamaican rapper who incorporates hateful gay statements into his music. "Well I'm think of a new Jamaica, me come to execute all the gays." His defense against these lyrics is that being gay is much different in Jamaica, and he was referring to rape. This either demonstrates a need to cover up what he truly means, or a misunderstanding for homosexuality as an act of rape. If there aren't many openly gay men in Jamaica, he may only see it as an act of male rape.
This reminds me that a lot of society that is anti-gay, is often misinformed. They only see homosexuality as a negative, based on their upbringing, lack of knowledge, or closed minded-ness.
By placing anti-gay lyrics in one's music, they are putting those negative ideologies in the hands of the public, and will further allow people to think gay discrimination is acceptable in our nation. We need more artists to come out with music that demonstrates their acceptance for our entire society, not just the majority!

We Are All Gay
Ellen Degeneres- We Are All Gay
From the very funny stand up comedy act, Here and Now, Ellen Degeneres starts her show by telling her audience they are all there because they are gay. She says that aside from all of there differences, the thing that brings them all together is being gay. The crowd cracks up and she laughs too, basically making fun of society's ridiculous assumptions and ideologies.
She goes on to say that people in the audience are probably suddenly paranoid that they are gay because of her joke, and they don't want people to think they are gay for being at her show. This joke makes a humorous reference to the gay paranoia in our society. The fear many people possess that they will look gay for making certain decisions, having certain likes or hobbies, and they desperately try to avoid acting homosexual. This of course stems from the negative connotations placed on homosexuality. Being straight is seen as morally correct, and being gay is associated as a negative-a bad thing. We struggle to embrace all types of identity characteristics in our society if they are not the majority. Even if someone is straight they can still accept homosexuality and be content in the differences in our society. The diversity we possess is what gives us so many perspectives and ideas, there is no need to discriminate against homosexuals for being different.
Ellen is someone who is very comfortable in her identity, and is proud to be gay. She has suffered many criticisms during her career and almost lost her job for who she truly is. I admire her so much because she was able to rise up again and still be who she is, but find success and fame in the process. She is very funny, and she is someone that gets applauded for her self expression and talent. Amongst the gay community she is a leader, and is admired for her success and comfortability in her own skin.
Part of her success stems from her ability to make fun of the opposition of homosexuality, and even the ability to make fun of herself. She demonstrates that there is no reason to make such a big deal about homosexuality. Gay people deserve equal rights and deserve to be treated with respect-they are not less than for their sexual orientation. Her great personality and humor makes her very likable, and makes her a great face for gay rights and equality.
Watch all of Here and Now, it's absolutely hilarious!!

Gender... a complete social construction?
After reading the "Social Construction of Gender" article, I thought about all of the times in our lives that we're put into a category based on our uncontrolled genetic makeup. How many things we "have" to do, and all of the things we "have" to be, simply due to our gender and race. We often don't even realize it because it's such a social norm at this point, but I keep wondering who I would be today if there was no stereotype placed on gender, and no one to tell me how to act. "As a process, gender creates the social differences that define "woman" and "man." In social interaction throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected, act and react in expected ways, and thus simultaneously construct and maintain the gender order."

Free Papers -Aly Fritz
This article forced me to think about all types of society that have ever been isolated, mistreated, or forgotten for some reason out of their control. I was drawn to the quote about the similarity between the physical and anecdotal aspects of history and the way that society hides shameful truths. "The way a society distances itself from physical structures whose purpose is to hide uncomfortable truths or bury undesirable "necessities" mirrors the way narratives of history and justice bury, evade, and marginalize."
