Gender... a complete social construction?

After reading the "Social Construction of Gender" article, I thought about all of the times in our lives that we're put into a category based on our uncontrolled genetic makeup. How many things we "have" to do, and all of the things we "have" to be, simply due to our gender and race. We often don't even realize it because it's such a social norm at this point, but I keep wondering who I would be today if there was no stereotype placed on gender, and no one to tell me how to act. "As a process, gender creates the social differences that define "woman" and "man." In social interaction throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected, act and react in expected ways, and thus simultaneously construct and maintain the gender order."
