Anti-gay Music

This article is about Beenie Man, a Jamaican rapper who incorporates hateful gay statements into his music.   "Well I'm think of a new Jamaica, me come to execute all the gays." His defense against these lyrics is that being gay is much different in Jamaica, and he was referring to rape. This either demonstrates a need to cover up what he truly means, or a misunderstanding for homosexuality as an act of rape. If there aren't many openly gay men in Jamaica, he may only see it as an act of male rape.

This reminds me that a lot of society that is anti-gay, is often misinformed. They only see homosexuality as a negative, based on their upbringing, lack of knowledge, or closed minded-ness.

By placing anti-gay lyrics in one's music, they are putting those negative ideologies in the hands of the public, and will further allow people to think gay discrimination is acceptable in our nation. We need more artists to come out with music that demonstrates their acceptance for our entire society, not just the majority!

  1. I think this is so interesting. and kind of surprising actually.Tourism and nightlife are among the most profitable industries in Jamaica (Montego Bay was rates #4 on the top 10 places to travel with beaches and nightlife. mademan.com reviews it: "Jamaica [offers] some of the best nightlife in the Caribbean."http://www.mademan.com/mm/10-best-places-travel-beaches-and-nightlife.html)

I dont think its a stretch to suggest that Jamaica's party culture is most likely also sex culture, which is why it's so interesting to me that the mainstream music of a sexed out mainstream culture is homophobic.

    Maybe its an anomaly?
Or maybe there is something about hypersexuality that facilitates homophibia???(David Pino has brought up hypersexuality as a theme of black mainstream culture, and Pino has suggested that homophobia compliments hypersexuality)
