National Coming Out Day

Despite all the anti-gay drama we've been hearing about recently, tomorrow (October 11th) is The Human Rights Campaign's National Coming Out Day. The formal title for the day is Coming Out for Equality, and the official site explains the history along with other neat things, like a new facebook app. I really encourage everyone to join the facebook group - especially in the light of recent events, it's a great time to show that gay rights are still being supported.

  1. National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11th, Eleanor Roosevelt's birthday!

  2. I feel like more events like these should be promoted! The biggest flaw with children being harassed for their sexual orientation, is that there is not enough awareness being spread. I think it should be some sort of requirement for schools to have a class (somewhat similar to a health class) that demonstrates the consequences of being intolerant.
However, it still makes me a little bit sad that there needs to be a National "Coming Out" day. Why can't everyone feel safe about coming out on any regular day? Being LGBT shouldn't be something unnormal, it should be something to be celebrated and embraced.
