Outrageous Discrimination

There are always haters here and there who say stupid things, but I still find myself baffled at some headlines.

For instance,  this story about two high school girls seems ridiculous to me. One has been kicked out of school, and the other, who had previously dropped out, was refused re-admittance. Why were these teens unacceptable students?

"18-year-old Melissa McKenzie said she was kicked out of Del City High School in Del City, Okla., at the beginning of the semester when the principal found out she was living with her girlfriend instead of her family. The principal then told her if she returned to her family's home, she would be welcomed back to school."

So the girls cannot attend high school because they are a couple. First off, that should have nothing to do with being able to attend school. Second, the "anti-lesbian" excuse is completely invalid because the high school in question is a public school with an anti-discriminatory policy that includes sexual orientation.

Apparently, the high school is ignoring the fact that several school board officials have told the girls to stop being gay in order to be re-admitted. Instead, the school administrators issued a statement saying the safety of students would always be top priority and suggested the girls file a complaint to the school board if they felt they were wronged.

Ok, what kind of answer is that? It just makes me really frustrated that two girls my age are being denied basic, public education on such a biased, hateful basis.

  1. It's interesting that the school’s administration would focus all their attention to that Melissa McKenzie was a lesbian and living with her girlfriend instead of asking the question of why is she not living with her family? Maybe she was having problems at home, so she had to move out for her own safety. Whether she had problems at home or not, I feel that it does not give the right to the school to use that argument of her having to move in with her family against her. Having her live with her girlfriend will not have an effect on how Melissa will do in school. So pretty much the school is completely in the wrong because the reasons they stated have no standing in today’s society.

  2. I also agree with Oxyspeedracer. I have heard of a similar story, but I cannot remember where. Its absolutely ridiculous that that is the argument that the school is using because what if McKenzie is actually better off living with her girlfriend? I believe she should not have to move homes in order to be able to get a basic education. The school would accept her back in if she moved back in with her family, but what if she had a good reason from moving away from her family in the first place? It does not seem like they are taking that into consideration at all what so ever and it makes me frustrated. The school would be satisfied if she moved back in with her family and they would not care if she was being mistreated. She should not have to do this in order to get her education. Her sexual orientation and where she prefers to live should not be a reason to have her kicked out of the school.
